New methods in polymer brush synthesis: Non-vinyl-based semiflexible and rigid-rod polymer brushes

نویسندگان

چکیده

Non-vinyl-based ‘grafted from’ polymer brushes have generated much interest and growth in the past decade due to potential for stiffer backbones, long-range order, new backbone functional groups, compared traditional vinyl-based brushes. This area of has been spurred on by recent advancements polymerization techniques, such as chain-growth condensation polymerization, that allow conversion step-growth polymers into required form via ‘grafting technique [1]. exciting category forms semi-flexible or rigid-rod structures a variety applications including organic photovoltaics, light emitting diodes, tribological coatings, membranes water purification desalination, fuel cells, high performance biosensing aromatic groups backbone, secondary bonding forces connecting chains, conjugated backbones [2], [3]. review will focus synthesis characterization non-vinyl-based brushes, primarily prepared technique, while also an overview these systems highlighting prospective areas future developments.

Spectral collocation methods for polymer brushes.

We provide an in-depth study of pseudo-spectral numerical methods associated with modeling the self-assembly of molten mixed polymer brushes in the framework of self-consistent field theory (SCFT). SCFT of molten polymer brushes has proved numerically challenging in the past because of sharp features that arise in the self-consistent pressure field at the grafting surface due to the chain end t...

Shear of polymer brushes

We have measured the normal, lateral and hydrodynamic forces that act between polymer-brush-bearing surfaces immersed in a good-solvent medium, both when stationary and when in motion with respect to each other. At low sliding velocities we find a very marked decrease in the frictional force between the surfaces, an effect interpreted in terms of a fluid interfacial layer resulting from the non...

Srongly Charged Polymer Brushes

– Charged polymer brushes are layers of surface-tethered chains. Experimental systems are frequently strongly charged. Here we calculate phase diagrams for such brushes in terms of salt concentration ns, grafting density and polymer backbone charge density. Electrostatic stiffening and counterion condensation effects arise which are absent from weakly charged brushes. In various phases chains a...

Responsive Polymer Brushes

The review focuses on responsive/switching behavior of polymer brushes. The structure of the polymer brushes is analyzed in terms of the constitution and conformation of polymer chains. Responsive properties are widely discussed based on phase transition mechanisms in a controlled environment when changes are induced by solvent quality, temperature, concentration of ions, and interactions with ...

Poly-Electrolyte Polymer Brushes

It is shown using the mean field theory of Miklavic Marcelja that it should be possible for osmotic pressure due to the counterions associated with the two polyelectrolyte polymer brush coated surfaces (in the absence of excess salt) to support a reasonable load (i.e., about 105Pa)with the brushes held sufficiently far apart to prevent entanglement of polymers belonging to the two brushes, thus...
